Harvest Thanksgiving (04/10/2026)

Communion music

This week we shall be listening to “For the beauty of the earth” by David Evans (1874–1948), performed by the Choir of St George’s Chapel, Windsor.

The words to this well-loved hymn are by F. S. Pierpoint (1835–1917). It was intended as a Eucharistic hymn, though is now often heard omitting the key final verse which sets the “sacrifice of praise”, referred to in previous verses, within the context of the Sacrifice of the Mass. More commonly sung to other tunes, it is here set to the tune “Lucerna Laudoniæ” by David Evans, who was Professor of Music at University College, Cardiff, from 1908.
