Communion music
This week, we shall be listening to “God so loved the world” by John Stainer, performed by the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge.
This is probably the best-known movement from Stainer’s 1887 oratorio “The Crucifixion”, and sets the words from the end of today’s Gospel reading (John 3:16).
Stainer, an influential and popular figure in Anglican church music of the period, was at the time organist and choirmaster at St Paul’s Cathedral.
