Communion music

On 8th March, we shall be listening to “Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks” by Herbert Howells, performed by Choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge

Howells’ compositional career at first mainly comprised orchestral and chamber works, but from the late 1930s he turned increasingly to choral and organ music. This anthem, a setting of the opening verses of Psalm 42, is one of a set of four written in 1941. The tune to “All my hope on God is founded” is by Howells, and named “Michael” in memory of his nine-year-old son who had died of polio the previous year.
