Communion music

On 14 June, we shall be listening to “Ubi caritas et amor” by Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986), performed by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge.

French organist and composer Duruflé left a body of just fourteen works, due to his high levels of self-criticism, but they are consequently of the highest quality, his Requiem being perhaps the finest. This is one of his “Four motets on Gregorian themes” (most of his works are based on Gregorian chant) written in 1960, and sets an antiphon for Maundy Thursday, “Where charity and love are, there is God”, reflecting on Jesus’ “new commandment” to his disciples at the Last Supper.
